The Battle for 2016 Begins!

With just a few hours left for the World Tour Finals to begin, tennis fans all over the world await a contest between the best in men’s tennis, for, this week promises nothing but the most magnificent display of tennis. Held in the prestigious O2 Arena, the men shall fight for their right to reign supreme in London.
The World Tour Finals can be called the ‘5th Slam’, after the Grand Slams due to the importance it holds, both in terms of ranking and form. It is an ATP event where only the Top 8 players qualify, making it a battle among the best. All players have to be ready, both physically and mentally for an intense last week of tennis. This tournament marks the end of the tennis season and usually determines which player ends the year at the No.1 spot.
Players fight hard all year to earn as many points as they can, to qualify for the Tour Finals. It is considered a matter of pride and prestige to be a part of the ‘elite eight’, as they call it.
The O2 Arena serves as the perfect venue for such a contest with the paparazzi, drama and spotlight all on it. There is some kind of an air surrounding the winner of this tournament, for he makes it known to the world that he has arrived and can compete against the very best. Djokovic has been there and so have Federer, Sampas and Becker.
This year though, the tournament does not have two of it’s usual suspects, Federer and Nadal.  Their absence can be felt, for we’ve been accustomed to seeing them battle it out here for years now. Nevertheless, it gives some of the other players a chance to participate and compete in this tournament. For players like Monfils and Thiem, this is a good opportunity although they will have to play their very best, if they wish to stand a chance.
Many players play their best in the round robin matches and by the time the semi-finals arrive, they’re tired and as a result, lose. At such times, we see players like Federer, Nadal and Djokovic upping their game, almost as if they had reserved their best for the last.
This year though, Murray has jumped up the rankings to the top spot and seems determined to end the year on a high, making him the ‘man to beat’ after of course, Djokovic!
Wawrinka is also another strong contender for when he plays his best, we all know the result…he runs away with the title! Another Wawrinka vs. Djokovic final would be an exciting proposition, but let’s see what happens…
Let us all till then, hold our horses and wait for this week to unfold.
