Lionel Messi turns 28 years old today. At this age footballers are generally said to enter prime of their careers. But we all know that Lionel entered his prime way way back. One of the two best footballers of this generation Messi has a record 5 Ballon D’or to his name. He has often been regarded as an alien by his opponents thanks to his other-worldly movements. His skills on the football field are a delight to watch. The things that he can do with football can hardly be emulated by anyone.
When Messi was just a youngster, he was diagnosed with ‘growth hormone deficiency’. At the age of 13, Barcelona signed him and agreed to bear the cost of his treatment. Lionel Messi has since then repaid the debt by banging goals for them left, right and center. He has been the focal point of the Catalan giants for the better part of a decade. Messi is one of those pieces that helped revived the sleeping giants Barcelona when La Liga was dominated by Real Madrid.
Messi made his presence felt at the world football scene by earning a Ballon D’or at an age of 22. He became the youngest one to do so. He also won four consecutive Ballon D’or which is a record in itself. He is currently the highest goalscorer for Barcelona.
Critics often claim that Messi is too afraid to leave Barcelona. But that is not the case. He will probably retire at Barcelona as they are the club that first had faith on him. Another question that gets raised at him is that he never performs with his country Argentina. But this is also untrue as recently he became the highest scorer of Argentina.
His only regret till date is not winning a major trophy with his country. However, that could very well change this Sunday when Argentina faces Chile for the Copa America.
