So, the Copa America 2016 is finally over and things are back to normal in the western continents. This year, the grand football party of the West was responsible for producing some stellar matches and goals galore. To cap off the tournament was a lackluster finale but a nail biting finish. So, here I am going to talk about the two teams of the finale and the after effects of the Copa America.
Chile emerged as Champions!
For the second time in a row it was Chile who turned out to be the most dangerous team in the South America. Before the last group stage match Chile were on the verge of getting knocked out. It was then they decided to fully throttle their challenge. And boy, they did that in style! Scored 4 against Panama. Broke Mexico’s spirit in a 7-0 beat-down. They even showed the door to one of the favorites Colombia. They battled the Argentines in the final, brought the game to a stalemate and beat them by experience. Whoever has seen the last year’s final, must have felt deja vu seeing the score 0-0 showing the way to penalties where Chile were crowned champions.
This victory over Argentina should establish them as the ultimate threat from the west.
Everything is not right at the runner’s up camp.
An attack that comprises of Messi, Higuain, Aguero, Lavezzi, Di Maria has to be the best attack in the world. And rightly so they are the world no. 1. But the same attack has also lost 3 major finals 3 years in a row! World Cup in 2014 and the two succesive Copa America defeats have raised eyebrows everywhere. When we properly analyse, we realise that a defense of Sergio Romero, Marcos Rojo, Nicolas Otamendi, Funes Mori does not inspire confidence. For years the Argentine attack has been bailing out their defense. Although I am being a bit harsh at them as they were little at fault today and the Rojo red card was unfortunate at best. Their best defender is Javier Mascherano whose natural position is in the midfield. Messi who was having a fabulous tournament ran out of luck as he was one of the two to miss the penalty. It was not just him, his attacking compatriots found Chile’s goalkeeper Claudio Bravo a bit too hot to handle.
Exodus at Argentina
After the Cup loss, Messi was the first one to announce retirement followed by Mascherano and Aguero. There are unconfirmed reports of Higuain, Di Maria and Lavezzi hanging up their international boots. This announcement has created shock among fans as they know that Argentina doesnot have enough firepower to replace them. Most of them apart from apart from Mascherano and Lavezzi are still on the right side of 30 which means that they can very well hold the Argentine banner at Russia 2 years from now at the World Cup. This is the reason that the fans have been enraged at these players as they have decided to be quitters rather than retire fighting until they can finally give up. A mass retirement from international for such a young squad has certainly tarnished the image of Messi and company.
